Abstract: Permanent weight control and an improved range of habits and feelings associated with eating and weight problems are the goals of this comprehensive, multi-discipline, nutrition and exercise program for adolescents. Many of the cognitive, behavioral, developmental, and biological issues important during adolescence are highlighted. Issues that are focused on include: 1) relationships with peers and parents, 2) emotional overeating, 3) experimentation with dieting, fasting, and food manipulation, 4) bingeing, 5) self-esteem, and 6) body image. Program content and format were desinged for a variety of applications from individual self-instruciton to group use. The program is an appropriate as treatment program for obese adolescents and as a preventive program for normal weight adolescents at risk for developing obesity or eating disorders. A variety of self-assessment techniques and daily writing practices are used to identify habits and attitudes and to measure changes as the program progresses. Evaluation instruments were field tested and modified based on input from group leaders, participants, and parents. Evaluation of the program in a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnics groups as well as geographic locations revealed that over 90 percent of participants completed the program, changed their habits significantly, and maintained an average weight loss of about 11 percent at one year follow-up.
