Abstract: The composition and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in the upper Blackfoot River drainage were recorded during the summer and fall of 1973, 1974, and 1976 to provide data for future assessment of mining impact. Basket samplers filled with natural substrate were placed at randomly selected stations. Analyses revealed the number of taxa, many of which were widely distributed, to be large (84). Mayflies of the genus Baetis and the midge family, Chironomidae, were the dominant forms. Shannon-Weaver heterogeneity indices for all stations ranged from 2.6 to 4.3, with most stations having 3.1 or higher. The benthic taxa of the upper Blackfoot River and its tributaries compare favorably with those of several unpolluted streams of southeastern Idaho. Several stations had large standing crop changes, but the causes of these changes are unknown.
