The way we eat
1979
The importance of food choices and lifestyle factors in maintaining good health are considered in this booklet from the Rhode Island Department of Health. A self-assessment tool identifies dietary components high in fat, sugar, salt, and calories. A daily food guide recommends an appropriate number of daily servings of foods in four major groups: meat and meat substitutes, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, grains. Specific guidelines are provided for 1) determining and controlling overweight, 2) reducing total fat intake, 3) reducing saturated fat and cholesterol, 4) cutting back on sugar, 5) recognizing high-sodium foods and reducing sodium intake, and 6) increasing dietary fiber. Simple and imaginative recipes are provided for breakfasts, brown bag lunches, and snacks. Suggestions are given for making healthy food selections at restaurants and fast food establishments. Additional features include 1) guidelines for modifying cooking techniques and making ingredient substitutions and 2) tips for making healthy food selections at the supermarket.
