Sugar controversy kit

Abstract: A teacher's guide and 11 documents present information and opinion on both sides of the debate on the value of dietary sugar in kit form. By viewing the ways special interest groups and other official organizations present, interpret, ignore, and often manipulate objective facts to arrive at contradictory conclusions, students will learn to see through such screens. Suggested student projects include: a panel discussion on sugar controversy issues; student monitoring of commercials used on children's television programs (especially Saturday morning cartoon shows); student inspection of random food product labels; evaluation of food products prepared or made available at the school; and a role-playing simulation project. A 17-item questionnaire is included for pre- and post-training polling of the students. (wz).
