A short summary of the history, and a description of the physiography, climate, soils and vegetation, people, and economy of Angola are followed by a report on the agricultural sector as it existed just before independence in November 1975. coffee was then the principal crop; corn and cassava were the staple foods. other important crops were cotton, sisal, bananas, beans, and potatoes. petroleum was the principal export, followed by coffee, diamonds, ironore, fishmeal, cotton, and sisal.
