Utilizing tube feeding and elemental diets in nutritional care

Abstract: The role of the dietitian in nutritional care of the patient requiring tube feeding is examined. The first step in this patient-oriented process is the identification of individual needs through patient and family interviews, review of the patient's medical record, and consultation with the health team. Assessment of the patient's current health and nutritional status is discussed. Factors related to the inital feeding are evaluated, including feeding volume, vitamin and mineral supplementation, formula ingredients, dilution, and nutrient and caloric content. Steps in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the nutrition care plan are described, along with considerations for hospital discharge. Nutrient content of several commercially prepared blenderized formulae and ready-to-serve liquid feedings is analyzed. The uses of elemental (liquid, low residue) diets in the nutritional support of patients, as a dietary supplement, and in pre- and post-operative diet regimens also is discussed. (nm).
