Relationship between zinc and copper nutritional status and risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease

Abstract: Since dietary parameters and metabolic imbalances have been implicated as risk factors in the etiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the zinc and copper content of hair samples from 64 males, aged 19-59, was measured to determine whether a high zinc/copper ratio might be associated with CVD susceptibility. A health questionnaire, blood pressure, height and weight measurements, a hair sample and a blood sample were obtained from each subject. Statistical analysis revealed no correlations between zinc, copper, or zinc/copper ratio and the CVD risk factors of hypertension, obesity, high serum cholesterol and triglycerides, cigarette smoking, or exercise-activity level. No correlation between serum cholesterol, triglycerides, hair zinc, or zinc/copper ratio with age was observed. A wide range of variation for these values within age groups in the subject population may explain the statistical results. However, the data do not support a high zinc/copper ratio as an etiological factor in cardiovascular disease. Appendices include sample questionnaires and values for exercise scoring.
