National assessment of extension's food and nutrition programs

Abstract: A USDA-supported study indentifies technical and management services needed to assist USDA's Extension Service in conducting a national assessment of the Extension Service programs in food and nutrition areas, focusing on program content, research base, program delivery, and audiences reached. The study involved 3 principal sub-study components, viz.: a review and analysis of state plans of work in food and human nutrition; a mail survey of state Extension specialists having food and nutrition-related program responsibilities; and a telephone survey of local (county) Extension staff having such responsibilities. Various options for Extension's future food and nutrition-related program efforts also were considered. The results and conclusions of each of the 3 sub-study components are summarized and discussed. Major findings are reported for the areas of: program planning; program topics; identification with the target audience; delivery methods; materials used by Extension agents; evaluation methods; perceived impacts and research needs; and the extent of involvement of Extension specialists in research activities.
