Abstract: The impact of nutrition on growth and development is reviewed in a volume designed for researchers and students of nutritional science. The approaches of both basic scientific research and field applications present a range of topics on the present state of knowledge of the effects of nutritional factors on growth. Complex interrelationships between nutrient requirements, food intake, food availability, genetic interactions, environment, dietry pattern, health, socioeconomic and cultural status, prenatal nutrition, and infant feeding have profound influences on human growth. Normal growth patterns of different age groups, as well as the specific syndromes of obesity, protein-energy malnutrition, falure to thrive and metabolic abnormalities are described. Growth monitoring, nutritional assessment, reference standards, anthropometric measurements, nutritional surveys and surveillance, and longitudinal studies are discussed with perspectives for developed and developing countries.
