Roland Maurice Jefferson was the first black botanist and plant explorer to work at the United States National Arboretum. He is known for his work with crabapples and flowering cherry trees.
Some articles, correspondence, and programs are in Japanese or Taiwanese.
Part of the collection was donated to the National Agricultural Library by Roland Maurice Jefferson in April 2006 and October 2006. In April 2006, Isabel Shipley Cunningham donated additional materials she collected to write a series of articles on Jefferson's work as a plant explorer.
