Factors Causing Errors in the Determination of Dry Matter and Nitrogen in Forage Crops
1956
Hesse, W. H. | Kennedy, W. K.
SynopsisGreen forage piled over bagged samples resulted in more accurate measurement of dry matter content of forage samples. The protection decreased moisture loss by evaporation. Weighing on an accurate balance in a building was more accurate than weighing immediately in the field on less sensitive scales. Respiration losses occurred when samples were not oven-dried until 24 hours after collection. Samples subjected to respiration loss showed greater concentration of total nitrogen than those with no dry matter losses.
