Dietary intakes of Title III meal program recipients and nonrecipients

Nutrient intake and nutrition knowledge was greater and dietary habits better in elderly participants of a Title III meal program than in a similar group residing in federally subsidized housing units. Both groups had high mean intakes of protein, iron, vitamin A, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C; recipients consumed more energy, and more of all nutrients except niacin and vitamin C, than did nonrecipients. As age increased, intakes of protein, iron, thiamin, niacin, and fat decreased. Neither number of meals eaten alone nor housing arrangements influenced the pattern of nutrient intake. Most of the subjects did not regularly use vitamin/mineral supplements. Nutrition knowledge was positively correlated with educational level; test scores were above 60% for both groups. (emc)
