Prepregnancy weights and smoking habits of over 6000 women having repeat pregnancies were studied. Only pregnancies associated with weight, smoking, income, and anthropometric data were considered. Data on black and white women were analyzed separately. Findings point to two generalizations: (1) Nonsmoking women weigh more than their smoking peers by 3 to 4 pounds; (2) Habitual nonsmokers gain an average of 1 to 2 pounds more between pregnancies than do habitual smokers.
