Diet and heart disease: Responses to the findings concluded LRC-CPPT

The commentaries, and experiences of 4 medical authorities address the findings of a 1984 scientific report of the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health concerning a 7.5-year study on the effect of the drug cholestramine, on reducing serum cholesterol, coronary heart disease (CHD) incidence, and CHD mortality. One authority submits that individuals whose plasma cholesterol remains elevated after diet therapy are candidates for drug therapy. The general consensus is that blood cholesterol lowering in the case of elevated cholesterol is beneficial in reducing CHD risk. Early diagnosis and treatment is indicated as a key. Guidelines for reducing elevated blood cholesterol and triglycerides are included. Twelve previous authoritative commentaries on the same topic were published in the last issue of this journal. (wz)
