Recent studies have revealed several clues to the phenomenon of underweight in humans. Genetics play a role in that the number of adipose cells which specialize in accumulating fat is genetically determined. However, the lack of these cells does not confer lifelong immunity from gaining weight. Another factor is body type; underweight individuals are termed "ectomorphs". They possess a small body, slender skeleton and narrow hands and feet. Finally, a body satiety mechanism associated with the hypothalmus in the brain controls food intake in underweight persons.
