Assessment of variability parameters and character association for quantitative traits in chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)

An experiment was conducted during spring summer season of 2007 at vegetable Research Centre, G.B.P.U Ag &T. Pantnagar, U.S.Nagar, Uttarakhand to assess the genetic variability parameters and association of different characters for improvement of marketable yield. Thirty diverse genotypes of chilli including three standard check (LCA 206, JCA-283 and Sel-7) were employed. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for all the traits. The study showed High PCV and GCV for three traits viz. no. of fruits/plant, weight of fruits per plant and red ripen fruit yield. Moderate PCV and GCV was recorded in plant height and fruit length, where as moderate to low PCV and GCV was observed in no of primary branches/plant. The lowest value of PCV and GCV was recorded for fruit periphery (14.60 and 10.83). The PCV was higher than GCV in all the characters except plant height, indicating the role of environment in the expression of genotype. The study showed High heritability along with high GCV and genetic advances was observed for weight of fruits/plant, fruit periphery, red ripen fruits yield, indicating that trait was controlled by addative gene effect. This suggests that the selection might be effective in the further improvement of these traits. The number of fruits per plant was significantly and positively correlated with weight of fruit per plant and red ripen fruit yield. It was revealed that characters viz, no. of fruit per plant, weight of fruits per plant and red ripen fruit yield were the most important traits for improving the genotypes.
