Genetic variability of bulbs and flowers traits in Hippeastrum puniceum

Hippeastrum spp., known commercially as amaryllis, has many ornamental species in Brazil, which present wide variation of flower colors. The aim of this work was to characterize fifteen genotypes from Hippeastrum puniceum at the Germplasm Bank of Federal University of Paraíba, in Brazil. Fourteen quantitative traits, including bulb length and width, number of leaves, leave length and width, petal length, flower length, number of open flowers, number of flowers buds, number of flowers per bulbs, pedicel, flower and stem length, number of stamens and number of pedicel were analyzed. To assess the genetic variability we used the Euclidean distance with Torcher’s grouping method. The genotypes were grouped in five different groups. The variable that most contributed to divergence was bulb length, 19.06%. The least important variable was number of pedicel. This last trait could be discarded in future works with this species. The variability found among the thirteen evaluated genotypes can be used in hybridization in breeding program the University Federal of Paraíba, in Brazil.
