Germplasm characterization in Malaysian species of Spathoglottis

Spathoglottis is a genus of terrestrial orchids that is attracting horticultural interest as a ground cover plant. Six species have been reported to occur wild in Malaysia, namely S. plicata Blume, S. aurea Lindl., S. affinis de Vriese, S. gracilis Rolfe ex Hook. f., S. microchilina Kraenzl. and S. hardingiana Par. & Reichb. f. This prompted our study of these species using morphology for qualitative characterization. Flower colour provides a clear morphological characteristic for distinguishing these species. From our observation, S. plicata is purple, S. aurea is rich deep golden yellow, S. microchilina is bright yellow, S. affinis is yellow, and S. gracillis is pale yellow. However, no established Spathoglottis morphological descriptor list has been made yet. Considering the need for germplasm characterization in Spathoglottis, we studied the morphological characteristics focusing on qualitative data of these species in intention to develop a table of characteristics of test guideline of Spathoglottis for the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) system or descriptor list based on formats used by Bioversity International. The morphological identification will be part of the bigger initiative to have all germplasm characterized and documented.
