Thirty-four patients with radiolucent (high cholesterol) gall stones were matched with 34 normal controls in assessing gall-bladder emptying in response to a standard meal. Such patients have fasting gall-bladder bile supersaturated with cholesterol and a small bile-acid (BA) pool size. The hypothesis is that postprandial gall-bladder emptying is increased in patients with gallstones. Oral cholecystography volume was used to measure gallbladder emptying; it was significantly higher in test subjects at 15, 30, and 60 minutes. The overlap would have been reduced only slightly had the volume of the gallstones themselves been subtracted from the total. Increased gallbladder emptying probably contributes to decreased BA pool size in patients with gallstones.
