Diets for children and adolescents that meet the dietary goals
1980
Dwyer, Johanna
Practical and specific dietary advice for parents of children over 5 includes information on present intakes of children and adolescents (based on the HANES survey), with suggestions about child diet and life-style practices. Recommendations include altering types and amounts of foods; setting a good example; permitting individual choice and variety; insuring adequate exercise; applying good sense in the use of food for emotional or disciplinary purposes; and avoiding restricted vegetarian diets. A 5-point strategy calls for decreasing foods with empty calories; increasing fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, dried beans or peas, and starchy vegetables; substituting alternatives for fatty meats and dairy products; helping parents make changes to facilitate improved dietary patterns; and improving other health-promoting behaviors such as exercise, oral hygiene, and alcohol use. Examples of menus and their corresponding nutrients are given.
