Ventral abdominal hernia, xanthoma and haematoma in Egyptian Swift pigeons: Diagnosis and surgical interventions
2015
Gomaa, M. | Nassan, M.
The purpose of this report is to give an overview about the diagnosis and surgical approach of different swellings in Egyptian Swift pigeons as these racing birds are valuable and economically important to pigeon fanciers. Eight Egyptian Swift pigeons suffering from 3 different surgical problems i.e., ventral abdominal hernias (n=4), ulcerated tumours (xanthomas) measuring 3×2 cm, 1×2cm and 0.5×1cm in the wings (n=3), and trauma with organized haematoma in the wing (n=1) were received. Herniorrhaphy was done in all the 4 pigeons without any postoperative complications. Xanthomas in 3 pigeons were excised surgically and confirmed by histopathological examinations. Wing haematoma was firstly explored by aspiration through a needle and syringe and then opened after its organization.
