Stability study of square timbers in simulated house frame service in Japan

A group of kiln-dried softwood timbers with various final moisture content (MC) ranges, was shipped to Japan from British Columbia. The specimens were 105 mm square in cross section and 3 m in length. Upon arrival in Tokyo, they were combined with a group of local and imported timbers of the same dimensions and moisture ranges. Initial dimensions, shape, and MC measurements were carried out on both groups and then all specimens were placed on a metal frame that simulated a house wall structure. They were kept in that assembly for about 26 months inside a commercial warehouse and their MC, dimensions, crook, twist, and diamonding were recorded at regular time intervals. Data analysis showed that timber stability is a dynamic state that changes with shifting environmental conditions, that is further affected by some of the wood attributes. Additionally, it was realized that deformations that developed during kiln-drying could change during transportation and in service in a positive or negative way.
