Zinc balances in humans
1982
Spencer, Herta | Kramer, Lois S. | Osis, Dace
The findings are reviewed for a number of zinc (Zn) balance studies carried out on adult subjects under strictly-controlled dietary conditions in a metabolic unit, with dietary Zn intake and its urinary and fecal excretion monitored for several weeks in each study. The studies were performed using different Zn intakes and under different dietary conditions. The study results indicate that Zn metabolism is strongly influenced by nutritional status, with low intestinal absorption and retention of Zn in cases of good nutritional status, and vice-versa. The retention and utilization of supplemented Zn appears to depend on dietary protein intake. (wz)
