Social and environmental influences on health behavior
1981
McAlister, Alfred L.
A brief overview of factors which influence child and adolescent health behavior also provides implications for promoting child health through the schools. The sources of health behavior are very complex, and programs based on narrow conceptualizations are unlikely to have a significant impact. A careful, comprehensive analysis of all the factors and processes involved in the development and maintenance of positive health behaviors is needed to stimulate positive actions and deter negative practices. Detailed planning must be done before limited available resources are allocated to the development and implementation of preventive school health education programs. Psychological factors must be considered in programs that aim to influence health behavior. (wz)
