Assessment of iron nutriture by determinations of hemoglobin, hematocrit and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin was performed on 581 children, age 5-14, from three Milwaukee elementary schools. To examine the relationship between specific demographic variables (family size, income, employment status) and normalcy of blood values, target low-income and middle-income schools were selected. These schools were identified by eligibility rates for free and reduced-price school meals and produced significantly different populations with respect to the variables identified. Unlike previous studies, no association between socioeconomic factors and iron nutriture was found. Normal values on all three tests were present for 81.4% of the population and were not dependent on any of the sociodemographic variables surveyed. Whereas government assistance programs may be making a positive contribution to these results in low-income families, the need to screen for iron deficiency in higher income populations is also apparent.
