Long-term use of a high-complex-carbohydrate, high-fiber, low-fat diet and exercise in the treatment of NIDDM patients

A longitudinal follow-up study was conducted on 69 non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients (42 males, 27 females, ages 35-82 (mean age, 61.5)) 2-3 years after they completed a 26-day program combining a high-complex-carbohydrate, high-fiber, low-fat diet with daily exercise. Mean fasting glucose was reduced from 179.5 to 133.5 mg/dl during the program; 24 of 31 patients discontinued oral hypoglycemic agents, 13 of 18 discontinued insulin, and serum cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced 25 and 27%, respectively. At 2-3 year follow-up, fasting glucose had not significantly changed, and 7 and 4 more patients were taking oral agents and insulin, respectively. Exercise and diet examinations at follow-up indicated a good continued compliance to the program. The principal cause of patients returning to medication at follow-up was attributed to their percent of calories derived from fat intake. (wz)
