Content of iridoid glycosides in different parts of Castilleja integra

The flowers, bracts and leaves of 16 individual Castilleja integra plants were quantitatively analysed for their iridoid glycoside content. Catalpol and macfadienoside were found in all plant parts. Shanzhiside, methyl shanzhiside, 8-epiloganic acid and gardoside were concentrated mainly in the leaves, while adoxosidic acid and adoxoside were mainly or exclusively concentrated in the bracts and flowers. A trace component was shown to be 6-beta-hydroxyadoxosidic acid, a previously undescribed iridoid. There was a high degree of variability in iridoid content and patterns among individual plants as well as plant parts.
