Relationship between weight reduction and state of malabsorption after jejunoileal bypass for excessive obesity

Fecal fat loss increased markedly following jejunoileal by-pass surgery in 30 excessively obese subjects (mean initial weight, 122 kg) and the daily fecal fat content remained abnormally high in 14 of 20 subjects through a 10-year follow-up. Surgery produced no serious complications, and a satisfactory weight loss was achieved in 75 per cent of the subjects. Mean body weight decreased about 29 kg by 1 year after surgery and then stabilized at this level throughout the 10-year follow-up. Weight loss was attributed to defective digestion and malabsorption, and to some extent, to an initially reduced food intake. Some degree of steatorrhoea generally existed after 10 years. Nitrogen fecal loss doubled during the first year, but returned to pre-operative levels thereafter.(wz)
