Revision of the Ontario phenylalanine equivalency system and development of a low protein equivalency system
1982
Chan, Linda | Bell, Louise | Hanley, W.B.
The recent revision and extension of the "Phenylalanine Content of Foods" equivalency system, developed in 1975 by Ontario dietitians for use in dietary treatment of phenylketonuria, are described. This revision (presented in tabular form) includes 372 food items in raw and processed form (an increase of 33 over the previous system). The system provides food lists in a simple version for patients (listing serving size per phenylalanine equivalent (1 equivalent providing about 0.5 g protein and 125 kJ energy)), and in a more detailed form for dietitians. The translation of the revised system into a low protein equivalency system for treating urea cycle disorders and amino and organic acidopathies also is outlined. (wz)
