Thermophysical properties of cross-linked polyethylene during thermal aging

Thermal degradation of insulation layer is the most common failure mode of medium- and high-voltage cables. The deterioration in the thermal properties of the insulation material will increase the working temperature and accelerate thermal degradation of the insulation layer. Therefore, in order to predict the remaining lifetime of cables accurately, the thermal properties of the insulation layer during service need to be known. This paper reports the measurement results of density, specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and thermal conductivity of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), which is widely used as cable insulations, during thermal aging. The experimental results show that the above parameters of XLPE do not change significantly before reaching the aging lifetime. This indicates that the thermal properties of XLPE insulation layer are stable, which is critical for a stable working temperature of the insulation layer during the normal service life of the cable.
