Integrated approach for management of head smut and shoot fly in Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum L.) under rainfed ecosystem

Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum) is a hardiest drought resistant small seeded crop grown under poor resource based situations by tribal farmers in quite large area of the country. Incidences of head smut (Sorosporium paspali-thunbergii) and shoot fly (Atherigona simplex) limits the production of kodo millet every year substantially. In the present study, 430 land races of kodo millet collected from 7 districts of Madhya Pradesh including two checks were screened for their reaction against these two biotic stresses. None of the land races were found highly resistant or resistant to head smut. However, 16 cultivars namely RPS 539, 575, 581, 583, 590, 804, 818, 820, 830, 859, 886, 898, 910, 977, GPUK 3 and JK 13 were found moderately resistant showing smut incidence between 1.1 to 5.0%. Nine land races viz. RPS 811, 902, 904, 905, 929, 941, 946, 967 and 968 were highly resistant to shoot fly. Based on the pooled data only seven cultivars namely RPS 575, 583, 804, 910, 977, GPUK 3 and JK 13 were shown resistant/moderately resistant reaction against head smut and shoot fly. Seed treatment with carboxin and thiamethoxam @ 2 g kg⁻¹ seed each and one foliar spray of monocrotophos @ 1.5 ml/liter of water at 15 days after germination managed head smut (95.8%) and shoot fly incidence (82.2%) along with 40.7% increase in grain yield.
