On behalf of the United Nations
1985
A brief overview of the magnitude of global malnutrition and its causes cites malnutrition as the world's number 1 health problem, developing as a chronic erosion of health that is perpetuated by a disregard by governments of the nutritional consequence of their fiscal, monetary, food import and export policies. It is argued that research on correcting the lack of incorporation of nutritional considerations into national agriculture, education, and health programs is essential and long overdue. The role of the United Nations and the World Health Organization in programs such as the global eradication of blindness due to vitamin A deficiency is discussed. It also is argued that an intensification of research is needed to explain the full role of micronutrients in disease promotion and disease prevention, and to understand the pathways of basic socioeconomic determinants of malnutrition and changing behavior.(wz)
