Bacteriological criteria for feeding raw breast-milk to babies on neonatal units

It is proposed that milk with commensals in any numbers may be considered for use unheated in milk banks; however, milk containing any potential pathogens should not be used unheated. Since the commensal organisms coagulase-negative staphylococci and S. viridans turned up so frequently and in such large numbers, milk containing these organisms can be considered normal. There is no evidence that these organisms are pathogens when given orally; it is therefore concluded that milk containing these bacteria in any number can be used unheated. Perhaps the milks which grew potential pathogens can also be considered normal since they were consumed by healthy babies. Nevertheless, the acceptability of unheated milk should await more information concerning the pathogenicity of these bacteria when consumed in milk.
