Sound pollution level reduction in Cluj-Napoca parks by introduction of new constructive elements in the general concept of landscape design

Due to fast development of urban areas the importance of existing green spaces rises. They are supposed to fulfil human, ecological, biodiversity, peace and tranquillity, and open air activities needs. Romanian cities tried to stand against green spaces reduction. Several studies indicated that sound pollution levels affect most town areas in Cluj Napoca County. During day time approximately 70% of the county is exposed to sound pollution, and 65% during night time. The most sound polluted areas are in the centre of the city. These are areas with tram or train tracks, and areas near airports. This study tries to define for its inhabitants an urban green area of peace and tranquillity in Cluj-Napoca City. The area follows European standards and laws with regard to environment protection, use of alternative energy sources, ecology The area is located near an urban mixture, private lots, schools, city hall institutions, driveways, and pedestrian walkways, close to a tram line. The study shows that terrain topography influences sound level. Terrain modification and the growth of different species of trees and shrubs as well as a protection wall against sound pollution are suggested for environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing public green areas such as squares, city hall parks, and playgrounds.
