Effect of Organic and Inorganic Sources of Nitrogen on Yield, Milling and Nutritional Quality of Rice (Oryza sativa)

A field investigation was undertaken during 2001 and 2002 at the Agricultural Research Farm, Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, with an objective to study the effect of organic and inorganic sources on yield and quality of rice grain. Pooled data revealed that incorporation of N through chemical fertilizer (T₉) followed by combination of D.S + P.M + C.W @ 40 kg N ha⁻¹ each (T₈) increased the milling qualities such as hulling, milling and head rice percentage significantly over rest of the treatments. Among organic sources, the hulling, milling and head rice percentage due to incorporation of all the three organics @ 40 kg N ha⁻¹ each (T₈) improved significantly over other treatments. Different sources of organics along with their combinations and chemical fertilizer showed their effect in building up the total amylose and protein content in rice grain significantly. The application of chemical fertilizer (T₉) gave maximum improvement in amylose and protein content followed by the application of D.S + P.M + C.W @ 40 kg N ha⁻¹ each (T₈). Application of N through chemical fertilizer (T₉) brought about significant improvement in grain yield of rice crop and established superiority over rest of the treatments.
