Reducing discharge of ascospores of Venturia inaequalis with a spring application of benomyl, thiabendazole, or urea

Connor and Heuberger (2) reported that one postharvest application of benomyl (methyl 1-(butylcarbamoyl)2-benzimidazolecarbamate), made before leaf drop, prevented development of perithecia of Venturia inaequalis the following spring. mcIntosh (4) reported that postharvest applications of benomyl gave similar results. keitt and Palmiter (3) found that postharvest foliar applications of arsenicals and other eradicant fungicides reduced the severity of apple scab. burchill, et al. (1) also reported that sprays of urea prior to leaf drop reduced perithecial development the following spring. miller and Rich (5) showed that fall application of fertilizers reduced ascospore discharge the next spring, but fertilizer application in a dry spring had no effect on ascospore discharge. effects of applying benomyl to leaves in the spring is unknown. the relationship between a spring application of benomyl, thiabendazole (2-(4-thiazolyl) benzimidazole or TBZ), or urea on the subsequent discharge of ascospores of V. inaequalis was examined.
