A study examined longitudinal and mortality data for a long-range health study of Harvard University alumni, and concluded that habitual post-college exercise (but not sports activities during school years) is associated with a reduced coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Sedentary students becoming physically-active alumni evidenced a low CHD risk while sedentary alumni, including ex-varsity athletes, evidenced a high CHD risk. Exercise level inversely correlated with total, CHD, and respiratory mortality, with hypertension being the highest clinical predictor of CHD risk. (wz)
