Dietary chromium intake of lactating Finnish mothers: Effect on the Cr content of their breast milk

The breast milk and diets of 15 lactating Finnish mothers were lower in chromium than those of any other population group reported. Average maternal daily dietary intakes were determined by 27 day food records. Mixtures representing the calculated mean daily food consumption of the 2 survey weeks, and breast milk samples from each mother were analyzed for chromium content by atomic absorption spectrometry. Results showed that the average maternal diet provided 30 micrograms of chromium per day and breast milk had a mean chromium content of 0.4 nanograms/ml. Chromium intake did not correlate with breast milk concentration. Although all the diets were nutritionally adequate in energy and other micronutrients, all were lower in chromium than the lowest RDA limit for this trace element.
