Peer involvement in the nutrition education of college students

College students represent a population in which nutrition intervention is frequent]y desirable but relatively unexplored. Many studies have documented the low level of nutrition knowledge of students. Accompanying a lack of nutrition knowledge are poor dietary practices. A preliminary prevention and outreach program, the Student Nutrition Adviser Program (SNAP), which uses peer advisers, has been developed at the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, the peer advisers are trained to give four presentations. Topics for these presentations were selected from the needs of college students as documented in the literature and from topics student groups requested most often before development of SNAP. The topics are weight management for the college student, eating disorders, nutrition and stress, and nutrition and fitness. A flyer describing the presentations available is distributed to campus groups so they can make requests.
