Operators see increase in social, business customers
1979
Wood, Leonard
A national sample of 490 restaurant operators were surveyed in March 1979 on changes in types of customers during the past year. Results varied according to average cost of meals served; a general trend toward more customers in "adult social groups" and "groups of business people" was noted. 44% of the respondents reported an increase in each of these groups. 38% reported increases in couple patronage, and 36% in adults with children. The smallest increases were for singles (19%) and groups of teenagers (16%). Operators of more expensive restaurants reported the largest increases in social and business groups. Dining out at expensive, adult-type restaurants has decreased over the past year, however, while eating out in family-type restaurants has increased significantly.
