Individual parameters shape foraging activity in breeding king penguins

Individual characteristics affect fitness, especially through foraging behavior. We investigated how age, breeding quality, and experience influence foraging effort during a breeding season in a long-lived seabird, the king penguin. We show that individual parameters differentially influence trip duration according to the breeding stage and their energetic needs (i.e. incubation vs. rearing periods). An individual’s quality determines whether they can cope with the harsh environmental conditions to which penguins are subjected during the austral winter.
