Under roughage based feeding systems, rumen manipulation techniques aim toward increasing fiber digestion, propionate production, yield and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis and decreasing methane production. Various physical, chemical, biological and biotechnological methods have been applied to optimize rumen fermentation with limited success. Recent studies have shown that plant secondary metabolites (PSM) at lower concentrations can be used to manipulate rumen fermentation and to improve animal productivity. Saponins and tannins, the group of secondary metabolites that have been widely investigated for their pro-nutritive effects in ruminants are reviewed in this paper.
