Disabilities in children that result from nutritional deficiencies are discussed. Malnutrition is responsible for the high death rate of infants in developing countries and is also a contributing factor in a number of disabling diseases. Deaths due to kwashiorkor, a protein deficiency disease, have now been surpassed by deaths due to marasmus, a deficiency of both calories and protein, that primarily affects children who are not breastfed. Eighty percent of handicapped children with multiple impairments have been identified as malnourished. Vitamin A deficiency causes night blindness in an estimated 10 million children. Iodine deficiency causes goiter. UNICEF has developed definitions for the terms impairment, disability, and handicap for program planning purposes in an attempt to reduce and eliminate nutrition related deaths through nutrition education.
