Methionine and threonine supplementation of a protein poor diet during lactation--effect on diet intake of dam and weight of dam and pup, and on plasma threonine and liver neutral lipid content of dam

Increasing the methionine content of the diet from 0 to 0.3% resulted in an increase of diet intake by the dams which induced a decrease of their weight losses and a better growing of the pups. A threonine additional supplementation had no effect on these parameters. In the lactating rat, the neutral lipid content of liver increased with a 0.1% methionine supplementation of a low protein diet and reached a plateau with 0.3-0.4%. Moreover, a threonine deficiency and a steatosis was observed from the 0.1% methionine supplementation level. A threonine supplementation did not prevent the methionine induced modifications observed during lactation. This inefficiency of threonine concerned neutral lipid content as well as morphological alterations of liver.
