Inhibition of Erwinia amylovora and potential antagonistic bacteria by essential oils and natural compounds

Several essential oils have antibacterial properties, some of them have been found to inhibit Erwinia amylovora the causal agent of fire blight (Scortichini and Rossi, 1989; Vanneste, 1996). Whether or not, any of these compounds has a role in a strategy for control of fire blight has yet to be determined. In this study we looked at the potential impact on potential antagonistic bacteria (Pantoea agglomerans (formerly Erwinia herbicola) and Pseudomonas fluorescens) of some of the essential oils previously found inhibiting E. amylovora (Vanneste, 1996). The authors also looked at the ability of some terpenes and of other natural products (such as fungal metabolites) to inhibit E. amylovora and potential antagonistic bacteria.
