A brief review highlights the benefits of a high-carbohydrate, high-fiber diet to diabetics in reducing serum glucose and insulin response. Five hypotheses to explain the mechanism of these effects are cited. Tabular data on the dietary fiber content of numerous cereals, fruits, and grain products are included. The development of high-fiber foods for diabetes control is urged.(wz)
