Trace elements in carcinogenesis

A review of the role that various trace elements may play in carcinogenesis summarizes and discusses the recent relevant literature with respect to 11 different elements: selenium (Se), arsenic (As), iodine (I), zinc (Zn), cadmium, lead (Pb), chromium, nickel, copper, manganese, and mercury. Several trace elements have documented anticarcinogenic effects (e.g., Se, As, I), while others may enhance cancer incidence (e.g., Pb) or reduce the anticarcinogenic effect of a trace element (e.g., Zn reducing the anticarcinogenic potency of Se). Particular attention is given to the anticarcinogenic effect of selenium. Additional aspects of these effects are reviewed and discussed. (wz)
