Evaluation of Blackcurrant Cultivars in Estonia

Blackcurrant is an important small fruit crop in Estonia with 884 ha grown in 1999. Breeding and evaluation of cultivars has been conducted at the Polli Horti-cultural Institute since 1945. The present study reports the results of evaluations at Polli, to identify cultivars which are the most suitable for production in Estonia. The main attributes sought are productivity, resistance to blackcurrant gall mite (Cecidophyopsis ribis and mildew ( Sphaerotheca mors-uvae), and suitability for machine harvesting. Observations on phenology, winter-damage, berry weight and fruit quality are also presented. As the result of these evaluations, the cultivars 'Zagadka', 'Lentyai' (both of Russian orgin), 'Pamyati Vavilova' (Belarus), 'Titania' (Sweden) and 'Varmas' (bred at Polli, Estonia) are included in the 2001 list of recommended blackcurrant culti-vars for growing in Estonia. 'Zagadka' and 'Pamyati Vavilova' are suitable for ma-chine harvesting, and 'Zagadka' is also resistant to blackcurrant gall mite. 'Lentyai', 'Titania' and 'Varmas' are suitable only for hand harvesting.
