Nutritional status of hospitalized alcoholic patients

Nutritional assessments of 530 hospital patients with primary diagnosis of acute alcoholism show that malnutrition may not be as strongly linked with alcoholism as previously believed. Only 13% of the sample showed evidence of malnutrition. Findings are partly attributed to the appearance of fewer indigent alcoholics in hospital populations today. Although most of the sample were chronic alcoholics, they were generally employed and able fo function in society. Also, alcohol does have nutritive value; consumption of a pint of whiskey provides about 1,500 calories. Complete nutritional assessments are appropriate only for patients at "high risk," with prolonged withdrawal symptoms, additional medical problems, clinical evidence of liver disease or involuntary weight loss, and the elderly.
