Vidal González, Pablo | Nahhass, Badiha
Nomadic populations are undergoing a critical transformation, induced by globalization, new forms of urban life, and climatic changes, which are accelerating desertification. One of the most successful technologies introduced into their extensive cattle-raising regions is the mobile phone. This paper focus on the use of this technology in Oriental region of Morocco, primarily inhabited by sheepherders of the Beni Guild tribe, and its impact on the daily life of shepherds and cattle breeders, as well as their families. The results indicate a major improvement in social cohesion amongst the populations, and an increase in flock size, but also a greater presence of large foreign flocks, and resultant overgrazing.
